Dominance and power of the mother is felt by the reader on page 23 as an extreme close up and high angle is used to show her aggression. The visual feature of social distance is varied throughout the story. Winch (et al, 2011) states that visual literacy is a person’s ability to differentiate and critically evaluate visual content in terms of its relevance to the text and following this develop a personal understanding of the story. This text is a positive resource for strengthening children’s visual literacy skills.

The visual features presented throughout are varied and require the reader to think critically in uncovering hidden meaning embedded within the illustrations. These features positively enhance the story and create intrigue within the reader. Visual features of social distance, framing, vectors, colour and tone and symbolism are evident throughout. Voices in the park written and illustrated by Anthony Browne is a visually powerful piece of children’s literature.
